Evidence shows that the overwhelming majority – 79 percent – of funds fail to meet their benchmarks over a 10-year period.* And those that do are rarely able to repeat that feat. But far too many retirement plan advisors ignore those facts and instead build portfolios by trying to identify managers that will outperform.

With such low odds of selecting just one fund that will beat its benchmark, what are the odds that advisors who use this approach can select 10 to 15 different funds that all beat their benchmarks over the next 10-, 15- or 20-year period? Not very good. This approach can also lead to disruption for participants when underperforming funds are swapped out for so-called “hot” funds, creating buy-high/sell-low scenarios that negatively impact returns.

We base our investment selections on what research shows is the best way to invest. We are guided by the standards of conduct for plan fiduciaries as provided by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) of 1974. ERISA incorporates the American Law Institute’s Prudent Investor Rule (1992), which gives fiduciaries direction on how to meet their legal obligations when selecting and monitoring funds.

The managed portfolios help take some of the emotion out of the process by ensuring employees follow the golden rule of investing: buy LOW and sell HIGH. This is done through systematic portfolio rebalancing.

1 – Professionally managed portfolios.

These portfolios take much of the work out of the investment selection process. They are designed around levels of risk and expected returns and are rebalanced according to these formulas each quarter. Our conversion and enrollment process involves helping each of your employees uncover their willingness, need and ability to take risk – and finding the right managed portfolio based on their answers.

2 – Individual Fund Selection

If your employees prefer to create their own portfolios, all of our underlying investments are also available individually.  This may be the best choice for those who want to incorporate their assets with other investments , or if they work with an outside advisor.
